Getting Started: Building a Foundation

You’ve seen the videos, read the article, bought new shoes and even signed up for your first 5K. So now what?

Time frame

Setting a time frame for your training is important. Mentally you need to know there is light at the end of the training tunnel. Setting up (for example) a four week training time frame helps inch you a day at a time towards your goal. For the Supernovas I set up a six week training time frame, with a two week break, that prepares them for a 15 week time frame.

Slow and Steady wins the race

Once you decided your days to run, remember to keep it nice and slow or even walk if you have to. Your feet need to adjust to the amount of time they are exercising. A good strategy (if you are training with time not miles) is to run/walk your run.

For instance a 30 minute run can look like this

  • 5 minute run
  • 5 minute walk
  • 5 minute run
  • 5 minute walk
  • 5 minute run
  • 5 minute walk
  • Total time 30 minutes

Consistency

Part of my coaching philosophy is Consistency. I believe in order to develop as a runner you have to chalk out days where you will run. Whether its three days a week or six days a week, remaining consistent week after week is essential when building your foundation.

Set your time frame, take it easy and stay consistent. These are good tips that will help you on your way into developing your running ability. Now all you have to do is get out the front door.
